The Source - Q-Tip Reveals Future Plans

Oprah is a real game changer

Some have decisive opinions on Winfrey and her ability to pull millions into her ego and in many cases amplify her message to those, whether they like it or not. All that aside, the woman isnt perfect, but has increased literacy, awareness and influenced many for the greater good. No one can fault her intention to take over the media world. Who better? And the notion that she happens to look like me, and had the same major as me in college as me makes me proud and inspires me. Look out world, here comes Ms. "O". All that money and media presence thus far, (the last 25 years) has been put to good use and not many can say that.

There are some MORONS who abuse their media influence (TUCKER CARLSON, RUSH LIMBAUGH, MICHELLE MILIKIN, BIL O'REILLEY...need I go on?)

Note to self and others....dont hate on those who dont project indifference and slander to get ahead.

I am Too West Coast for this east coast cold......UGH!!!!!!!

H.A.M. Of the Week Nomination goes to

The moron in the bathroom stall @ work that decides to carry on a phone conversation while blowing up like a volcano! 2 things. No I'll never ask to borrow your phone and whoever is on the other line (need I say more) Ugh!

Sometimes....its just a privilege

Its when articles as important as these come along, I tend to sit back and reflect on how much of a privilege it is to work in this building postwritersgroup.com. Yes, in this crazy media rat race, reminders surface that articulate the quality associated with this organization. Being collectively responsible for making sure as many people; locally, nationally, and internationally read impeccable editorial commentary. The ode to "fairness and justice" is apparent in article, along with the hope and change I still believe in. As do many. Those that do not...should. Even naysayers will have to acknowledge the milestones our current president has engineered.

HBCU BBALL

tryin to support HBCU bball but this CoppinSt/UConn game is brutal. UConn got trees for guards and Coppin got shrubs.....YIKES!

persistence. some call it drive, others call it, goin' hard. I call it determination

Thinking about the future. My professional future. Apparently I'm not a spring chicken. A damn near decade of print media experience under my belt and ten years later, one wonders, what the hell does that mean? In an industry that apparently "turns more tricks, than a hooker" (thanks Iman); where is it all headed?  With a theory based advanced degree, application is now necessary. The wave of the media future is all about applications. Its time to get on board.... And its time to put myself out there.

Snowy Blues

Go out, stay in, go out, stay in....

Its 10:00pm on a Friday night and I survived the area's 1st snow of the year. Wasn't too bad, only 2 inches. Not the end of the world. Snow also means its not that cold considering. It was strange to watch my Chargers destroy the 49ers in my hometown (WHY COULDN'T THEY DO THAT TO OAKLAND WHEN I WAS THERE IN PERSON?) last night because everyone had on short sleeves. Ugh.....one day I will get used to this east coast thing. I used to always wonder what a white Xmas would be like, but after last winter, dammit, you can keep it. Spring, where are you? All that aside, not too many complaints, other than witnessing the twitter explosions about weaves on fire, wikileak madness, Obama signs the tax-cut deal, McNabb getting the bench for the rest of the season, and word that Lindsay Lohan will be getting out of rehab (AGAIN) at the top of the year. Some folks cant wait for 2010 to be over apparently.

I think I'll be staying in tonight, Maybe I'll decorate my damn tree (its been sitting in the living room naked for 2 weeks, thank goodness its not a real one)......

Returning to the Grind

Its one thing to write a few press releases for some NFL events and charities. Its another to have a     minimal presence on a local online publication, specific to the town within a town. To copyedit and act as editorial sales support by day for one of the most significant publications in the world, is a great opportunity. All of these things are great but its time to up the anty.

A Communications masters needs to be put to better use. Newspapers for the most part have been good to me. The worry of newspapers as an industry within the media spectrum existing in a few years is apparent. I've had six months to marinate on the feat of a graduate degree and have come to the conclusion that not many black men have advance degrees. There has to be a way to capitalize on this newfound success. The path was bumpy but not as crazy as it could have been (I've heard plenty of horror stories).

Is becoming a freelance publicist the answer? What does that mean? What does a publicist do? An opportunity has presented itself, in the rarest form. The kind that shows up in the next seat on a coast-to-coast flight to California. Yes I can write. Yes I can do wonderous things on a Mac. Those things have been self indulgences, along with a few tricks picked up in school and on the day job. I have many of the skills necessary to conduct publicist type business. This should be a no brainer.

After talking to the potential client (@ 6:30am), a manager, and myself even, it seems that taking a chance and doing something I like to do as a legit side hustle is the way to go. If nothing else, I consider myself resourceful and as much as I detest cats, they tend to land on their feet most of the time. That mentality must be taken on to participate in the things I like to do (and eventually get paid for it). To no longer be a bystander in an industry I know a lot more about than I originally thought.

To objectively evaluate professional and personal self-worth is a lofty goal. I think I may be on my way and deciding to enter unchartered waters is the first step.

The Bad Hair Day (apparently I wasnt the only one)

On the drive to the Metro......I realized I didnt brush my hair.....darn. At first I thought about how absolutely vain that was of me to be so upset over the 3 centimeters worth of hair that is actually on top of my head. I tried to forget about my bed head and go on about my usual, chalking the morning up to being just another case of the Mondays so I chose to take the high road and forget that my hair looked like a used S.O.S. dish scrubber. I managed to block out the insanity known as my hair until I got on the train only to find the most ridiculous weavealicious woman sitting in front of me. Shall we say Eek! Her head looked like that room of heads in that Return to Oz movie that Dorothy had to run from. In February during the worst storm in the DC Metro area's history I would have been more empathetic. At least that shiwalla would have kept her head and ears warm. Its June, and its 90 degrees. A co-worker of mine expressed her disdain for women who have just too much hair in the summer time. To quote her, "I'm hot for her"! The reality check set in and I decided to go to CVS and grab one of those cheap brushes and go on about my day. I get to the drug store only to find uber expensive brushes and combs and realized that my thinning hair isnt all that bad after all. The lesson here is that there are more important things to life than vanity. For starters there is no practicality in a pom pom full of hair on your head in June. Specifically, vanity is just not practical or productive. There is something to be said for dressing appropriately for work, and another for overkill. Proper work attire does include hair but the perfect slick-down is not the way to secure the job of the future, or keep the job of the present......

H.A.M. OF THE DAY

WHY DOES JORDAN LOOK LIKE A CHINESE DICTATOR WITH THAT THING...... its not like anyone can even see that S.O.S. pad underneath his nose since he's black as night!

Still truckin....minus one mudflap

Disappointment always comes with another dimension besides the expected anguish. That old saying, "when a door closes, another opens"; is rather cliche but has merit. I wouldn't call it a door, maybe a Subaru mudflap that just wont stay on lately. One day it will stick, and when it does, watch out world......

Game 3.....Among Other Things

Missed the 1st quarter, thanks to some Wii Fit Plus and some tennis at the park under the lights. I surprised myself a bit. There have been a lot of self-reflecting questions regarding my fitness as of late in a good way. Apparently I am not the only one who's self-reflecting these days. That Van der Sloot guy felt the need to confess to killing the daughter of a Peruvian public official (smart guy). Supposedly he killed Natalie Holloway but we'll never know since there is no body and she disappeared five years ago. Smooth move MORON......
Maybe Kevin Garnett will do some self reflection after this season is over because I am convinced he needs a psychological evaluation PRONTO!!!!!
GO LAKERS!!!

HOT ASS MESS.........ALERT

THEM DAMN LAKERS.....I still have faith in my Lakers......even with this blemish of a game......UGH!

H.A.M. POTENTIAL....

If they dont hurry up with that damn iPhone.......H.A.M.!!!!!

Game 2 NBA Finals

Its just before half time. Missed the 1st quarter to squeeze in a bit of bball and some tennis before it got dark. An interesting day, complete with weekend work, thunder, gossip, and sports (real and imagined). My Lakers were a bit of inspiration for my cousins who called to say "be at the court in 15 minutes". Normally, after drinking dogfish and flying dog all afternoon I would be in no shape. But watching highlights from game 1 of this series, and Nadal sealing his own fate as the newly ranked #1 seed and 2010 French Open Champ. Maybe I was inspired to put down the PS3 controller and go out side.
Who knew I would drop what I was doing, throw some fish in the oven and roll out. Maybe I was hiding in the hole I dug myself into arguing with the one that means the most to me over things that just went over my head. Maybe I was too ego driven to see my own madness. Do I let things go over my head on purpose, just so I dont have to face my own reality. Apparently my reality is the drive and desire to get up and keep blogging. Keep writing. Keep swinging. Keep shooting. Keep dreaming.
Coming down from the high of receiving my masters in front of my whole family (extended included). Side bar on that weekend......a whole other enchilada. I found myself wondering what I would do with all this new found time. Tennis has been good, video games are mindless and something that I enjoy. Writing is another passion that I need to reinvest in, as well as reading. I also need to inform as many folks as possible all the H.A.M.s I encounter. Stay Tunes for more tennis, basketball, newspaper and gossip madness..........this blog is on and poppin again......
H.A.M.'S beware.....i'm gonna find you and expose your madness to the world in hopes of empowering you to do better. Even if its just an improvement on a horrible ensemble, or a message of inspiration......
