an end to 2011 ... and being 'thankful' at xmas

Thanksgiving came and went, we're on to Xmas....and I somehow think its still thanksgiving. The holiday that isnt about presents. its about family, friends, giving, and things to be thankful. This holiday season has reminded me how thankful I am to be employed, have shelter, and an education to use at work and in the class with my students. As my first semester ended, I became keenly aware of my responsibility as a professor. From a rocky summer, to a holiday season with a lot to be thankful for. Xmas is great and am glad to share it with those around me but I think the thanksgiving spirit has stayed with me....and I'm ok with that. More people should be. Teaching speech/mass communications, writing copy for collateral, media pitching, press releases and media kits. Its the life....and when I have time to do all that, and catch an occasional happy hour with some good don julio, or a great beer from magic hat, flying dog or brooklyn, i'm doing ok...........

New position

Wowzers...I cant believe I am now an adjunct speech comm lecturer. The new title definitely fits into the master plan. I just never expected things to work out as they did, and are. I have the daunting task of coming up with a seamless syllabus. Some may think that is minimal in the grand scheme of things, but this is something that I take seriously. SPCH 101 is the gateway class to most of the students' tenure in college and it is my responsibility to ensure professionalism at all times. Although I am excited about this opportunity, I am starting to feel the pressure. Granted I have almost 10 years of media experience, I have ZERO teaching experience. It is my hope that I can bring this experience into the classroom and give students a lecturer that has real world experience, experience that they will need in work and in life. Learning to speak and write with creativity, conciseness, diction and grammar perfection is a lofty task but students of all ages, generations and walks of life deserve someone who will work tirelessly to "level the workforce playing field" one student at a time.

Congressional Black Caucus Criticism

The president's role is to say yes and no (power of veto) to what's brought to him by congress. I'm sure he's aware of the issues so in addition to voting for him, the local, state, and national primaries determine who have legislative authority to write up policy pertinent to among other issues, minority employment. That being said the black caucus needs to be just as concerned with its voting base (or the lack of) at those levels before they throw the blame at one of the few that's in their corner. Black voting turnout is horribly low in local elections. The County I vote in has its executives and city councilman getting locked up left and right for corruption and DC is no better, let alone California. Yes Alameda, Los Angeles and San Diego Counties THIS MEANS YOU! Everyone and Black folks in particular (Black unemployment hovering around 16% nationwide), need to concentrate on who they are electing at the local level first and foremost since they are the ones who are instrumental in fighting for jobs in the communities they are SUPPOSED TO BE SERVING.

Are We There Yet? (TV show) - Season 2, Episode 6 [HD]

So much better than them BET shows, and current issues are addressed. This it the first time seeing this. No wonder Ice Cube is the executive producer. SOMEBODY WITH SOME DAMN SENSE. Complete without the 2011 COONERY and BAFFOONERY! Its funny how they snuck in the LGBT storyline!

ARTISTIC EXPRESSION: The Floacist - Let Me (Official Video)

Initially I was taken aback by the, shall we say nekkedness....lol. But clearly this is not the same as that other chick from Barbados who shall remain nameless RHIANNA! The cliched saying "This is grown folks business" can easily be used in this case. She's not objectifying herself in the normal "VIDEO VIXEN" capacity. There's an artistic quality to real music. Yes some might say that the RHIANNA doesnt have anything else to rely on other than sex to sell records and subsequent image. Others might think she is God's gift to music. Museums are famous for images of the body in sculpture, portraiture, and photography. What's different here? I dont think "Umbrella" will be in any museum anywhere....or even considered artistic expression. I'm not a hater; if all you got is sex to sell, then sell it damnit. Just dont expect everyone to believe there is something deeper in terms of art, musicality or self expression. Just sayin'.

The Life of a Budding Publicist

Looking back at my meeting notes from last evening's pow wow with one half of a local duo known as DTMD, I realized that their talent and ambition are a great addition to my roster of clients. They bring to the table the hunger that hip hop needs right now, especially since they dont have bars representative of what is wrong with the world in terms "our" stereotypical involvement. The younger generation needs something to listen to that is not a reflection of the everyday criminal, hustler on the corner, or the man with the cane and a pair of Bruno Magli's who just may have a "clientele" of his own. Hip Hop has not really disappeared but the "children" on the radio make listeners believe that its current state has nothing more to offer than the horribly saturated rap/rock star/video vixen image. There is more out there, and more to come. Artist of my generation have families, and other interests. Yes they speak about extracurriculars but still address politics, cultural empowerment, civil liberties, and socio-economic conditions, which all add to the phethera of diversity in all music. Hopefully new groups like these will inspire more coming behind them. As a publicist, my job is to make sure that their goals are met, when it comes to who they are trying to reach. They believe that the generation - y's and z's are smarter than some of their contemporaries who showcase their glorified studio gangster mentality as if that is the only way to make the game better. Granted those "studio gangsters" have good publicists if nothing else; I just hope that my work with DTMD brings to life a much needed answer to lack of intelligence in hip hop. Check them out... http://dtmd.bandcamp.com

Talib Kweli "I'm On One" Music Video

The Status Quo

Its amazing what the rest of the country takes advantage of in 2011. Having Internet access seems like something "everyone" has but that is clearly not the case. The status quo apparently is anyone who has the means and the opportunity to access the Internet. This is not everyone. Minorities, particularly African Americans do not necessarily fall in to this classification, especially when it comes to high-speed access. Even if all the working-poor, lower middle-class, and middle-class Americans could afford to pay for a subscription to an Internet Service Provider, it is yet to be determined if high-speed, and/or fiber-optic systems even run lines in areas where the "working-poor" live. One has to wonder who has seen a Verizon FIOS, Comcast or Cox truck in their neighborhood installing, what legislation claims that everyone has.
